HELMUT NEWTON

MANNEQUIN BEING TOSSED OFF ROOF , 1978
Taking cue from the Surrealists, Helmut Newton often used mannequins to create work that played with our notions of objectivity and the agency of models. In ‘Mannequin being tossed off roof’, Newton takes compositional direction from Yves Klein’s seminal ‘Leap into the Void’. The unnatural form of the figure, uncommon perspective and contrast between the stillness of the figure and movement of the world below was characteristic of Newton’s avant-garde imagery for the campaigns of Yves Saint Laurent.
